What does it mean to be a seeker?

To define what it means to be a seeker we must first define the word itself. Webster defines it as “One who seeks an honor, office, position or award.” Dictionary.com defines the word more simply as “A person or thing that seeks.” Whichever definition we look at a seeker in some form seeks something. If you were brought up to never use any part of the word in a definition as I was then you could say that it is someone who looks or searches for something.
If we are seeking or looking for something than two questions come to mind; what are we looking for and why are we looking for it? What we are looking for can vary from person to person and situation to situation. It is not static. What after all can be anything; physical, spiritual or emotional and everything that encompasses. Why we are looking for it is also not static however the reasons are more limited.
When it comes to why the first reason is the obvious; because it (whatever that is) is lost and so we want to find it. The second reason would be because we want or need something that we do not currently have so we go looking to acquire it. People’s reasons may be more nuanced than that but will still fall into those two broad categories. Now we have defined the word ‘seeker’ as well as the reasons for seeking.
As followers of Christ what does it mean for us to be seekers? Being a seeker starts before we even begin following Christ actually. After all we are all lost and born into a broken and lost world. The first thing we must seek is Him and through Him salvation. Once our lives are given to Christ than what we seek changes. Now that we are saved, we seek His face, His presence and a relationship with Him.
This is something we will seek all our lives. No matter how deep and personal our relationship with Him gets He will always be trying to draw us deeper. On top of this is the fact that like any relationship ours with Christ must be maintained. As your relationship deepens with Christ (and in case anyone is wondering I am also including God when I mentioned Jesus, not just the Son) you will begin (hopefully) seeking His will. What is it He wants from you specifically? While many answers can be found in the Bible you still need to seek His will for His specific plan in your life.
Finally, and this will be a part of His plan we are to seek the lost, the broken, the damned. How you will do this will be varied; some will be called to have one on one conversations, some to reach through music, writing, film, and more. No matter how you do it that is the goal; to reach people for the kingdom. Anything you are called to do, whether it be to intercede for governments or to go to a foreign country will always come down to saving people, even if it is not you specifically leading people to Jesus but instead are paving the way so it can happen.
