The Secret Place

Have you ever heard of The Secret Place? The first time I heard about it was in 2017 during a meeting of a church group we called The Underground. The way it was explained to me was that it was a place where you and only you could go and meet one on one with Jesus or any of the threefold Godhead. Here you and He could connect on a new level and could talk without anyone else able to overhear you. It was truly for just the two of you alone and was unique to each person.

It has only been within the past year that I have gotten to actually go there. There were a lot of obstacles that had prevented me from entering the secret place, most of them put there by religion. Once I was able to break through those barriers, I finally found it. If you will walk with me I would like to show you what my secret place looks like and tell you a bit about what has gone on there.

At the entrance is a wrought iron gate that curves up towards the center where the gate doors meet. The gate is attached to the inside of a stone arch. Green hedges run out from each side of the gate and wall it off from the outside world. When I touch the gate, it is cool to my skin. Stepping inside makes me feel like I’m in another world, cut off from anything outside, in fact all I can see from the outside are trees stretching into the sky.

In front of me is a small dirt path lined with decorative stones with more hedge walls lining it from the gate. The chirping of birds and the rustle of water can be heard even from here. The air is pleasantly cool to me with no humidity and inhaling it always bring a peace and refreshing. At the end of the path is a sunny clearing with a large stone fountain shooting water into the air, gracefully falling and running from a small top bowl into a larger bowl below. Inside the large bowl I can see small colorful fish such as goldfish darting about.

When stepping into the clearing I can see it is ringed with more hedges, trees, bushes, as well as a wide variety of colorful flowers. Gold, orange, and blue winged butterflies’ flit between the flowers. In front of the fountain is a stone bench. This is often where I find Jesus and where we spend a lot of time talking. Here I can tell him anything, even the things that I’ve done that I’m not proud of and not once have I ever felt judged or condemned for it. He can be serious when addressing these things but a smile is never far behind so you know you are still loved and how happy He is to see you. Once He had me bring a box with me filled with my cares and worries and give it to Him.

I remember asking Him about why He had built the secret place and He told me that there were several reasons. The first was He wanted a place just for Him and I to be together. He really wanted a special place just for us. There was also the practical reason of having a place where the enemy could not get to us, could not overhear us and anything spoken of was just between Him and I. Another reasons was that He loves to create and build. Since He built the universe why not build something special, make it beautiful and peaceful? One thing He told me was that He tailors each place to each individual that’s its meant for.

If we got past the fountain, we see two breaks in the hedge wall leading to two other paths. The one to the right I have not been able to go down, it is obscured by a thick fog. Jesus reassured me that I would be able to go there in time just not right now. He also told me I would love it when He took me there. The left path opens up into a wooded area, reminding me a bit of places I enjoyed exploring as a child. Below is a grassy bank and a gently flowing creek singing its rippling song. When we go there we don’t talk as much but instead just lay on the bank, listening to the water, the birds chirp, the wind through the trees and the gentle feel of soft grass on our backs.

That is my secret place so far and whenever I go there I find myself rejuvenated and more at peace that before. I encourage everyone to find their secret place and take that time with Him because it will absolutely help get you through the times, we are in. Don’t let religion get in your way either. What set me free was learning that it is ok to visualize what meeting Jesus is like and as I did so I was able to unlock the secret place as well as new depths in worship. I wish I had been taught that earlier, so I pass it on here in hopes that it helps you as it did me.
